Medical nutrition therapy (MNT) is a term used to define nutrition therapy and the critical role that nutrition therapy plays in health and medical care. MNT involves the management of nutrition using prescription-based formulas and is used to develop a personalized nutrition plan in order to assist patients in effectively treat and manage disease. 

Your doctor can write a prescription for the services of a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist.  MNT is usually covered by health insurance plans.  Check with your insurance provider to find out about reimbursement.

A registered dietitian will develop an MNT plan that incorporates the following patient information:


  • anthropometric measurements
    biochemical indices and laboratory data     
    clinical signs and symptoms     
    food and nutrition history preferences
    individual learning styles and behaviors
    cultural heritage
    religious practices and food-related beliefs
    attitudes and concerns
    socioeconomic status
